Snappr 2D QR Codes – and possible uses?

January 8th, 2009
Adding QR code for Social Networks such as Facebool

Adding in QR codes for you social networks on Snappr

Snappr is a service that allows you to create 2D QR codes. Seems quite cool – but Im still trying to figure out exact uses for it. On Snappr you can create your own QR code linked to say for example your social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter etc.. you can also add in codes for text messages (160 Chars), contact details, websites addresses (wahtever you want really), as well as Music files and images. So all the information is encoded in the QR code. Im presuming you need a reader of some sort to interpret the image. There seems to be a movement towards embedding these codes on bags, fashion, public places. Its interesting anyway. Go check it out and comment back with any updates. Id be very interested to hear what people know and have used them for. I saw an article in Mashable by Dana Oshiro Have a read of it, it proposes 5 uses for the Qr code.

Social media gone wrong

December 15th, 2008

The following article is a second installment to the initial “superlist of social media”  article. Some interesting videos and the most recent Motrin Moms ad is played which caused a furore with Mums in the States. Have a look through. There’s certainly some resources here that are worth putting in the RSS reader to follow.

Brands on Twitter?

December 12th, 2008

Lots of chat at Mashable today about whether or not brands belong on twitter. Interesting topic. Brands that just spout regurgitated press releases and pretty anodyne commentary are really irritatiting for most twitter users. But those that do it well and have an actual conversation with people and reply etc… have a place. I was making a comment the other day about PeopleBrowser (twitter client) and the founder of the company (@WingDude) and his partner both responded to me within 30mins. They’re obviously in brand protection mode but also in customer service mode too. You cannot fault them for either really. It makes sense from both perspectives.

The reality of it is you’re not going to be able to ban brands nor should do. Let brands participate – if they do it badly, its going to be plain for all to see. It also gives them opportunity to offer free or promotional stuff to consumers. No bad thing either. As an example, I saw Blacknight hosting service do this the other day. Plenty more scope for lots more like that. And if brands participate in a real manner, thats good. And if they don’t – then don’t follow them. Its going to be interesting to see how Twitter decides it’s going to monetise. It’s going to have to make some decisions soon you would think.

What do you think? Go have a look at the Mashable page and gather your thoughts.

Great Blog to Follow

December 8th, 2008

Jeremiah Owyang’s blog is a well written and well thought out blog that anyone interested in social media would be well advised to subscribe to and follow. You can also follow him on twitter at @jowyang Twitter. He is a web strategy and social media analyst with Forrester and he provides excellent commentary and analysis on all things digital and social – I’ve enjoyed following him over the last while. He’s a prolific twitterer – so well worth listening to those tweets.
